Why we give
Question:
Are we to give because we have been reminded? How does that kind of giving
reflect our hearts?
2 Corinthians 9:6-8
Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap
sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man
should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under
compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace
abound to you, so that in all things at all times,
having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
Question: Is our individual giving supposed to
be a spectacle before men or a personal act between ourselves and God? Should
we not behave the same way as a church as we are to act as individuals
Matt 6:1-4
1 “Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be
seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2
Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as
the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory
from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 3 But when you do a
charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
4 that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in
secret will Himself reward you openly.
Question: Is our giving from our "first
fruits" or from our leftovers?
1 Corinthians 16
1 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the
churches of Galatia, so you must do also: 2 On the first day of the week let
each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there
be no collections when I come.
Question:
Should our giving/tithing be an occasional "reaction" to a reminder
or a consistent act of personal worship and thanksgiving to God?
2 Corinthians 8
10 And in this I give advice: It is to your advantage not only to be doing what
you began and were desiring to do a year ago; 11 but now you also must complete
the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to desire it, so there also may
be a completion out of what you have. 12 For if there is first a willing mind,
it is accepted according to what one has, and not according to what he does not
have.
Question:
Do we believe that our faithful giving will result in us not being able to meet
our own personal needs?
2 Corinthians 9:8-12
8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having
all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance
for every good work. 9 As it is written:
“ He has dispersed
abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever.”
10 Now may[c] He who supplies seed to the sower, and
bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the
fruits of your righteousness, 11 while you are enriched in everything for all
liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God. 12 For the
administration of this service not only supplies the needs of the saints, but
also is abounding through many thanksgivings to God,
